The Democrats Can Re-enfranchise 21 Million Voters by 2018. Without Congress.
Under the direction of the Republican Party, 21 million voters of color, voters with disabilities, and poor voters were deprived their Constitutional Rights to vote in the 2016 election because of Voter ID Requirements. 21 million.
Fortunately, there are efforts that can be taken immediately to re-enfranchise these voters before the 2018 midterm elections.
Jim Crow laws such as Voter ID restrictions are illegal, but they have rarely been challenged in the lower federal courts. When they are brought to court, though, these suppressive policies are overwhelmingly struck down.
Democrats can take immediate legal action to re-enfranchise 21 million voters by bringing Voter ID restrictions to court and challenging them under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. They can also move to repeal Voter ID restrictions through traditional state practices. The processes by which legislation can be repealed varies by state, but all efforts should be made to eliminate Voter ID restrictions in the 34 states that carry them — especially Blue States.
As the midterms draw closer, it becomes more and more unsettling that these actions have not been taken yet.
As such, the Strategic Institute of Intersectional Policy (SIIP) is working to let the Democrats know that we can re-enfranchise 21 million voters before the 2018 midterm elections — and that both the Party and the People have a responsibility to do just that.
SIIP is urging the Democratic Party take immediate action in two ways:
1. Voluntarily move to repeal Voter ID restrictions in all states — especially states under Democratic control.
2. Fight Voter ID restrictions in the lower federal courts under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
SIIP is also encouraging the People to encourage the Democratic Party and their elected officials to take immediate action.
