Text of Petition:

Under the direction of the Republican Party, Voter ID restrictions have spread to 34 states across the country. In 2016 alone, 11% of the population — or 21 million voters — were kept from exercising their Constitutional right to vote because of these restrictions. The overwhelming majority of suppressed voters were people of color, low income voters, and voters living with disabilities.

The Strategic Institute of Intersectional Policy (SIIP) believes the mass suppression of these traditionally Democratic voting blocs has gone unchallenged for far too long. Every eligible voter should be able to cast a vote in the 2018 election.

Fortunately, we can make this happen!

While widespread, these Jim Crow policies remain illegal under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Voter ID restrictions can also be repealed at the state level through traditional legislative processes. As such, SIIP is asking the Democratic Party to:

1. Voluntarily move to repeal Voter ID restrictions in all states — especially states under Democratic control.

2. Fight Voter ID restrictions in the lower federal courts under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

If these actions are taken immediately, 21 million voters can be re-enfranchised before the next mid-term election cycle. Add your name to this petition to let the Democrats know you want to end voter suppression by 2018.
